DISCIPLE
GROUPS

WHAT ARE
DISCIPLE GROUPS?
Disciple Groups include 4-6
young people with one or two adult mentors to help plan and
carry out service projects with them. Disciple Groups should
complete a minimum of two
service projects a year. (One per
semester) More are encouraged and recommended!
WHO
MENTORS THE DISCIPLE GROUPS?
Mentors for these groups have
come from the entire St. Clare Parish Community. Parents
participate as well as aunts, grandparents, sponsors, young
adults and senior members of our community. Usually a Disciple
Group finds its own mentor.
WHY
PARTICIPATE IN A DISCIPLE GROUP?
A goal of St. Clare School
program is that the students not only understand the meaning of
being a disciple of Christ, but also become disciples. A
goal of the program is sixty hours of community service during
Jr. High. These Disciple Groups provide a small portion of the
service hours.
WHERE CAN
WE FIND IDEAS FOR SERVICE?
There are opportunities in a
variety of areas- family, neighborhood, parish, school, and
community.
Comments from previous groups and
service ideas will
be provided. Call the Religious Education Office for names of
contact people. (647-5054)
HOW DO
THE STUDENTS KEEP TRACK OF THEIR SERVICE HOURS?
The students are given a
certificate to fill out to verify the service they have
completed. The certificate is turned into their teacher where
they will receive a fish to hang on a fishing line
to keep track of their many hours of service. Each child
should strive for 30 minutes of service a week during the
two years of preparation for Confirmation. The certificate
includes the date, service description, how long the service
took, and a signature by a parent, mentor or person who received
the service. The classroom teacher periodically reviews this
record.
HOW ARE
DISCIPLE GROUPS FORMED?
Students are given the
opportunity to name three friends with whom they would like to
do service. A parent signature authorizes the active
participation of the student. It is a challenging process to
coordinate all the names and form the groups. The purpose of the
program is to make these service experiences worthwhile and
enjoyable. Sometimes students are not placed in a group with all
of their choices. It is our goal to place them with at least
one of the names on the card.
ARE THERE
DEADLINES FOR COMPLETING THE SERVICE PROJECTS?
At least
one service project should be completed
each semester.
A
written evaluation from the mentor (s) is requested by
December 15 and a second evaluation turned in by May
15. |
